Archaeologists reveal secrets of the pyramids on the island of Pico

Archaeologists reveal secrets of the pyramids on the island of Pico

The results of the first archaeological surveys of the structures that have been built before the arrival of the Portuguese in the Azores are presented today.

Hooks, metal spikes, bones, shells, weights for fishing nets, utensils made of basalt, coal fragments and pieces of pottery were discovered in the first archaeological surveys authorized by the Azores Regional Government (Regional Directorate of Culture) to the mysterious structures pyramidal Pico.
The pyramids are almost all concentrated in an area of 6 km2 in the municipality of Madalena, along the west coast of the island dominated by the highest mountain in Portugal (2351 meters) and public disclosure of the findings was made today at 21.00 at a conference in the House of Magdalene.
Surveys were made by Nuno Ribeiro and Anabela Joaquinito, who are enthusiastic about deposits ancient artifacts they found, and it seems to be much earlier than the date of discovery of the Azores by the Portuguese (1427).
But the two archaeologists from the Portuguese Association of Archeological Research (APIA), which are being supported by the Municipality of Magdalena, have a vast exploration work ahead: there are dozens of pyramids on the site, reaching up to 13 meters in height, equivalent to a building housing four floors. But for the 140 studied, some destroyed or partially felled by earthquakes or by human action.
A tradition based on popular memory and the few existing ethnographic studies indicate that "these structures, known maroiços, dating from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries, justifying its construction by the necessity of cleaning the land for agriculture," said Nuno Ribeiro. In fact, the word means Maroiço cairn associated with agricultural land clearing.

Similar structures in the Mediterranean

But this explanation does not convince the president of APIA, because "there are several buildings with more than ten meters high, following the same geographical orientation." And because the Portuguese territory "did not find this option architectural nowhere else." In contrast, "there are parallels with architectural Mediterranean regions - on the island of Sicily at Mount Etna, for example."
Anabela Joaquinito has been shown that when the people of the Magdalen photos of the buildings of Sicily, "said they were equal to maroiços". The archaeologist who studied the lithic technology (stone work) and is director of the Department of Prehistory of APIA, points out that there are other indications of architectural pre-Portuguese origin of the pyramids of Pico as "the existence of steps and decor with spiers on top. " On top of one of the buildings was studied also found a floor appears to be a circular base housing.
One structure is an architectural complex that includes pyramidal buildings arranged to create a large square. "This organization of space can not be explained only by cleaning the land, it will have involved a large planning and collective work that took several years to build, always following the same architectural design", Nuno Ribeiro argues.
"More amazing is the fact that these structures obey the same guidelines of other pyramids, with apparent motivations and suggesting Astronomical funeral rites," the archaeologist.

"I'm in Mexico"

"I am in Mexico," he said Romeo Hristov, an archaeologist at the University of Texas at Austin (USA), when he visited the maroiços Pico last April. Hristov belongs to the current academic advocating for regular contacts between the ancient civilizations of the Mediterranean and America.
"The structures of Pico are very perfect, involve a huge amount of work that is justified not only by the needs of agriculture," considers the archaeologist. On the other hand, "there is a strict astronomical orientation, access ramps and stairs associated with the concept of the sacred structure."
And the complex "binds to various buildings pyramidal elements are common throughout the world pyramids as a large square for functions". But a definite conclusion about the origin of the structures "will depend on the archaeological excavations, which are fundamental."
And also "the dating of materials found that are made in the laboratory," says Anabela Joaquinito. The archaeologist explains that some of these pyramids have cameras inside and one of them was the subject of archaeological surveys. "The camera is small and the access corridor too narrow and long, it would not be practical for all agricultural uses."

Regularity in the orientation of the pyramids

"What impressed me most was the regularity of the orientation of the pyramids Pico, although I believe that not all were built around the same time. Regularly This is evident in the map with its location made by the House of Magdalene", says Fernando Pimenta turn .
The director of the Department of APIA Archaeoastronomy geographic information tools used in this first investigation and concluded that most of the pyramids are oriented towards southeast / northwest.
East is the direction of the volcano of Pico Island and northwest corresponds to setting sun on the summer solstice, which happens on the island of Faial, Pico very close. In the remaining pyramids, have an orientation perpendicular to the first.
Fernando Pimenta admits that "seems to be intentional - not just a coincidence - the geographical orientation of the buildings and site selection for its implementation."
A large concentration of pyramids as small a range of azimuths (the azimuth is the measure of the regular horizon measured from the geographic north) and with this regularity means that there is intentionality, "but of course this conclusion is not as definitive, the statistical point of view, as it would if the structures were scattered throughout the island and not just concentrated in a small area of the municipality of Madalena. "
The arqueoastrónomo advances that rules of guidance "seem to obey the principles embodied some ritual associated with the summer solstice."

"Defense of historical truth"

However, the mayor of Magdalena stresses that "the involvement of the municipality in this process is guided by a strong commitment to the defense of historical truth and the need to know and preserve the roots of our people," which "is in the interest of all institutions, be they scientific, political or other, including the Regional Government of the Azores. "
But the definitive proof of the origin of the pre-Portuguese pyramids "must be obtained through a clear and unambiguous dating of material found," insists José António Soares, recognizing that proof of all these findings allow new opportunities for tourism development.
"We do not want to delete the Azorean history but add something to the story already known and, if possible, enrich it with new data available," added the mayor.
