Archaic Atlantic RingMound Builders

Suggested by Teresa Drusin. These structures are important because they relate directly to the Shellmounds of Brazil and have a similar subsistence pattern. The builders are also thought to be related (Timucuas are supposed to be related to Arawaks) and the ring-shaped structures not only recall Atlantis, they are also clearly ancestral to the later Mound Builders cultures. The evidence for a Bronze Age global catastrophe (one of Prof. Schiffer's dates) is also striking.

  1. with that much protein available they may not have needed to have gardens or crops but used the pottery for storage for dried fruit for winter?

as to either or not mesolithic cultures can have pottery well it depend just as much on how much clay is available and either there's a supply of wood for the firepits that preceded the development of kilns

  2. I believe you may have hit on something with the dried fruit idea but I would extend that to dried fruit and nuts. In the archaic economy those would have been more important than seed crops, although experimentation with seed crops seems to have been going on at the same time, and storing them over the winter (and especially the necessity of keeping them dry for storage over the winter) would probably have been a high priority.
The distribution of pottery in different cultures is troublesome, but one factor which always makes a difference is whether the culture adjoins the territory of a different culture that already has pottery.

    Best Wishes, Dale D.

  3. I knew that the things they built were incredibly difficult, but I had no idea that the Timucuas are supposed to be related to the Arawaks builders! I've never heard that before. it's highly fascinating. Thank you much for all the insight!
