More American-Cromagnon Connections: Chancelade

The other day I came across this reconstruction of the French Magdalenian burial at Chancelade. After looking at it a bit, I said to myself
"I know who that is-it looks like Red Cloud!" (above)

Chancelade is a commune in the Dordogne department in Aquitaine in southwestern France.
Chancelade is known for a prehistoric discovery: the so-called Chancelade skeleton was found in the shelter of Raymonden in 1888. The way it was lying suggested a ritual burial. In 1889, Leo Testut announced that the skeleton was of a new race, which he called the "Chancelade race", the ancestor of the Eskimo. This hypothesis is now rejected, and the Chancelade race is considered to be a Cro-Magnon.
The Chancelade man stands 155 cm tall with very big brain size, at about 1710cc.

The nose and midface of the Chancelade skull has been damaged-not surprisingly as the bones are very fragile there. Enough is left to tell that the nose was high, projecting and of medium width.

The Chancelade man belonged to the Magdalenian culture and he lived between about 12000 and 10000 BC, and the Magdalenians primarily hunted reindeer (and they may have managed herds in a semi-domesticated state. There is some evidence they also kept dogs and other domesticated animals, but this evidence is usually disputed.
The original description for the Chancelade burial which identifies several of the physical characteristics as resembling
"Eskimos" is at the link:

  1. The First Europeans was Mongoloids.

  2. To be more precise you needed to say the First Europeans were ASIATICS, or better still,Africans that came by way of Asia.

To say "Mongoloids" would be to presume that the modern-classification category was in existance then. I do not accept that notion. "Mongoloids" can only be proven to exist POSTGLACIALLY. In fact ALL Modern populations are pretty much the way we know them now ONLY in Postglacial times.

As a matter of fact I also do not subscribe to the general classifications of humans into such broad categories as "Mongoloid" "Negroid" and "Caucasian": all these groups are so large and broadly-defined as to make them meaningless as describing the diversity of humans that they were meant to describe. What we need to know at this particular time in prehistory is that there is a division of humanity that started out of Africa about 50-60000 BC and spread out from Central Asia in all drections about 35-40000 BC. These included the ancestors of all Europeans, NORTH-Asiatics and American Natives. To lump in Northern and Southern Asiatics into one "Mongoloid" race in modern times is a major diagreement with the genetic evidence.

So I hope you see where what you said cannot possibly be an accurate reflection of the situation. We don't even have adequate ethnic NAMES for the "Races" that were in existance back in those days, and if one group is the ancestor of all Europeans, North-Asiatics and Americans, it is an extremely misleading statement to call them "Mongoloids". You do however sometimes see the name "PreMongol" in the literature-but that is little better because it still has the same problem.

    Best Wishes, Dale D.
